The “British Columbia and Canada through Arriving Eyes” project run by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, identifies key materials describing German speaking immigrants’ experiences of British Columbia and Western Canada. It includes German and English material relating to immigrants with a German, Austrian or Swiss background, which immigrated ca. 1850-present to Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba). The collected oral history material contains around 600 images, 10 h sound recordings + transcripts and other scanned documents such as flight tickets and letters. The researched material such as literature, diaries, archival fonds, photographs, etc. contain around 350 of primary and secondary resources.

Dr. Kyle Frackman
Assistant Professor of Germanic Studies at the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies at UBC. He teaches in both German and Scandinavian subject areas. His teaching and research interests include 18th- to 20th-century German literature, the history and culture of the former East Germany, German and Swedish film, gender and queer studies, and intellectual and music history. Marc Stoeckle
Marc developed, programmed and designed the learning web portal and created the bibliography of materials relating to German’ speaking immigrants and their experiences coming to Canada. In addition, Marc has had the unique experience of meeting and interviewing German-speaking immigrants from all walks of life. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany at the Albert-Ludwig University and his master’s degree in Library and Information Studies at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at UBC. He is currently the Research and Learning Librarian for the School of Creative & Performing Arts and the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures & Cultures at the University of Calgary.
